We all either choose or choose not to engage in the relationship called “marriage” in order to become more complete. Even in today’s era wherein marriage is no longer an essential, but an optional, part of life, many people are still pressured to get married. The play A story about existence, survival and self explores the issue of marriage through the story of Heesu and Namil, whose passionate romance culminated in a marriage that ended in divorce four years later, leaving them to date other people instead. The three playwrights Hwang Jeong-eun, Jin Joo, and Choi Boyoung ask fundamental questions about “relationships” through the topic of marriage. The play reflects on the essence of marriage as we know it today, and where the relationship of marriage stands today.
