A Curator’s Writing
A curator should be experienced in a number of areas, but among these, being able to writing high quality essays is a crucial element of being a curator that should not be undervalued. In particular, as it reveals the curator’s perspective in an official manner, writing an introduction to an exhibition differs from a piece of critical writing. A well-written essay comes to possess its own power so as to allow viewers to appreciate the exhibition from many different angles; at the same time, it helps viewers imagine or comprehend the contents of the artworks before they see the exhibition.
Steps for Good Quality Writing
One requires practice and effort to write an essay that has natural and innate power. If one is not used to writing essays, more so than writing a long draft at the beginning stage, one should try to write short drafts several times, as it is important for one’s body and hands to become familiar with the “breathing” of writing. Also, a habit of consciously making notes can have a significant effect on one’s writing skills. Moreover, taking notes while reading can be an effective way to organize one’s flow of thinking according to contents of the book, and it can also be helpful for writing a good quality essay.
Along with writing, reading many texts is crucial. Reading a variety of material that encompasses different genres is necessary; this includes not only art-related professional texts such as art theory and philosophy, but also essays, poetry, and novels. In the case of the introduction of an exhibition, visual writing about artworks is necessary; thus, a science-fiction writing style can also be helpful to describe artworks.
Further, speaking practice is essential. Speaking is an act that requires not only understanding, but also expressiveness. Although speaking and writing are totally different mediums, they interact with one other. So, practicing expressing one’s opinions through dialogue and transcribing this content into writing can be very beneficial in developing compositional skills.
Once an essay has some degree of form, it becomes finalized through several phases of revision. Along with the various efforts described above, the process of revision is essential for producing a good essay. Also, reading a re-written essay out loud is useful for finding incorrectly structured sentences and misused words.
When an essay describes facts and arrives at criticism by way of rhetoric, an abyss emerges in between sentences. If one is concerned about, and practices, how to bridge and resolve such an abyss, one is able to draw out long breaths between sentences and imbue the essay with profuse and in-depth meaning, without using many unnecessary transition words. Furthermore, a pattern emerges in well-written pieces. This pattern of writing is carved out through the proper uilization of rhetorical techniques. Meticulous calculation is necessary to reveal the grains of this pattern entirely. Through such calculation, one properly untangles the writing pattern to harmonize it with the use of the mother tongue, Korean, and thus, a characteristic writing style and beauty emerges within the writing.
