DOOSAN Curator Workshop

Artist IncubatingDOOSAN Curator Workshop

Seminar IX - Jee-sook Beck

Nov.21.2013

On November 21, 2013, Artistic Director of the 4th Anyang Public Art Project (APAP) and Director of Atelier Hermes Jee-sook Beck led a writing workshop in which she reviewed the three Workshop participants’ writings on the APAP Anyang Pavilion exhibition.

A Curator’s Writing
The lecture began with a question: “Must a curator write well?” Jee-sook Beck explained that a curator’s writing is distinctly different from a critic’s subjective, critical writing, and further discussed the differences between the two. With regard to critical writing, it is now somewhat difficult to find critical writing that is written from a current art theory perspective and an art history position, and she advised the three Workshop participants that they should concern themselves with the kind of attitudes and roles they want to have as curators.

She further emphasized that for a curator, writing is a crucial element that cannot be separated from exhibition curating; thus, it can be an important way of revealing a curator’s perspective and taste. To produce a good piece of writing, one should maintain one’s own stance and guidelines. Beck went on to advise the Workshop participants to read many well-written texts, placing emphasis on the importance of “reading well before writing well.” Lastly, she discussed the importance of understanding one’s own writing style and methods, and concluded the writing workshop by reviewing and the three Workshop participants’ writings.
