Seminar IV - Hae Jin Pahng

May.27.2017

The fourth DOOSAN Curator Workshop seminar started with a reading of writings by the critic Hae Jin Pahng, and focused on a discourse questioning the grounds and roles of 'criticism' today.

The writings examined in the seminar were: artist Sojung Jun's project proposal ' Sojung Jun's Letter' recorded in her project EUQITIRC (2016), 'Sojung Jun <Sensory Movement Morphology>: A Guide to the Movement of Body Organs, or the Spirituality of the Organs' by the critic Hae Jin Pahng, and ‘[Public Art] Journey to Criticism' (by Yang-heon Lee) as a comprehensive review of the project.

A discussion was held on one of the most crucial attitudes in criticism: the importance of maintaining a certain distance between the artist or the art work and the critic. 'Giving distance' is more about capturing the 'surprising elements' of an art work or an artist that are central but easily overlooked or bypassed by the ordinary audience, rather than repeatedly mentioning the clear large framework on which the art work or the artist is based. The seminar wrapped up with a discussion on the role and meaning of criticism today, as explored in the writing 'The Impure Scenes of Contemporary Art/Criticism' by Pahng written for the exhibition Critical Practice (2017).
