DAC Artist Hyunju Kang studies the hidden values of social issues that exist around us. Focusing on the stories of ordinary people, Kang searches for ways to communicate actively with audiences beyond the confines of a theater. A Case of Faulty Growth tells the story of a research team studying plant disease-resistance genes at a national university located in a small town. Just as plants cannot expect a better environment once they have taken root, the researchers relied on their own survival mechanisms within in their respective environments and bring different perspectives to the project. A specimen that survives in a polluted environment might fill some with wonder but others with a sense of defeat. As the researchers fight prejudice to prove their hypotheses, they are unknowingly prejudiced towards others. Anyone can see themselves as an example of growing up in the wrong environment, but no one can make a definitive judgment. From the context of a laboratory experiment attempting to prove newly established hypotheses, audiences are encouraged to reflect on different approaches towards one’s life.
