Artemisia Gentileschi was the first female artist to paint religious a nd historical works of a kind that was imagined as impossible for women artists to accomplish. The Forearm of Judith in particular takes as its motif Gentileschi’s painting Judith Slaying Holofernes, which caused a great sensation in its time for its visualization of strong femininity. Having chanced upon a diary of Gentileschi’s, Jeongmin Ahn works with Minjeong Kim to track how the artist came to meet Judith. Why did she feel compelled to paint Judith’s forearm in such girth? Each in their own way, Kim and Ahn attempt to paint Judith’s forearm yet again, in all its firmness and girth.
Minjeong Kim is a creator of Korean traditional music, who plays the gayageum (twelve-string harp) and sings. Jeongmin Ahn is the head of the creative group The Blue Beard Collective, and works as a playwright and director. Taking familiar historical episodes as their material, these two have worked together to bring traditional Korean art closer to today’s audience. From 2019 onwards, they have taken a special interest in women’s stories, attempting to use various modes of expression based in Korean traditional art.
