DOOSAN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present Doosan Art LAB 2015 from July 29 to August 22, 2015. A program devoted to supporting various forms of experimentations by young artists, “Doosan Art LAB” has presented innovative works by artists in performing arts since 2010. The biennial exhibition Doosan Art LAB is organized to discover young fine artists, and this year’s exhibition Doosan Art LAB 2015 presents works by Seulki Ki, Yoon Hwan Bae, Soo Sung Lee, Hyunsun Jeon, Beomseok Cho and Byeong Seok Choi.

In her photographs, Seulki Ki captures the concept of ‘space’, which expands from her inner world and her surroundings and objects, to the invisible metaphysical space. Focusing on the subject and the subjective impression in its surrounding space, her works are produced through a repetitive process. In addition, the documentations (drawings, installations and performances) which trace the artist’s work are projected through slides or produced into books.

Yoonhwan Bae draws images of imagination and fantasy based on fables, art history and mythology. While the narratives in his works, from small drawings to massive roll canvases, are about his own identity, they also express the human life and its desires, imaginations and contemplations from multiple angles. Rather than dealing with the beginning and end of narratives or human relationships, Bae’s segmented images with nonlinear and incomplete structure allow for open interpretation.

Soo Sung Lee sensitively responds to his given condition and situation, producing ‘sculptures or installations in which the conditions for the work become the material’, or works that reference or mutate existing images or works. Although his works are a manifestation of genuine labor, the resulting outcome is often not evident. Lee’s work sometimes reflects the artist’s imaginations as to how the work, still at its initial stage of conceptualization, will disappear. His work also does not conceal things that have failed or are omitted in the process of art making.

While Hyunsun Jeon’s work originates from everyday observations and experiences, they reflect an intersecting point of multiple and diverse perspectives on uncanny situations that seem very unlikely to occur in reality.  By creating her own order and system of symbols, Jeon inspires the viewer’s imagination and opens the possibility for various narratives.

In his drawing, sculpture, installation and video works, Beomseok Cho captures his emotional response to everyday incidents and lingering images of collected objects. Within the conditions given to him, he creates new orders and relationships through minimal artist intervention in the formative features of the objects. The drawings and videos which trace the artist’s long period of meditation express the other side of reality that’s not easily exposed or perceived.

Byeong Seok Choi creates tools that reflect his conditions and hopes. The tools (traps) and mechanisms that originally served a particular function are reinvented by the artist into tools with a new special function. Rather than alluding to efficiency, the tools, endowed with a new function, serve as a symbolic agency which reflects the artist’s thoughts and labor in the process of waiting.
