Seminar VIII - Tae-man Choi

Nov.01.2016

The participants of the 7th DOOSAN Curator’s Workshop invited Tae Man Choi to the workshop on November 1st, 2016.  A professor at Kookmin University, Choi is a theorist specialized in sculpture, who has researched Korean modern sculpture since 1990s, and directed large scale sculpture exhibitions such as International Sculpture Symposium (2010) and Changwon Sculpture Biennale (2014). The workshop participants had the opportunity to learn about how Choi came to have a special fascination for the sculpture genre and engage in its research throughout his career at the Moran Museum of Art and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and currently as a professor at Kookmin University. Choi and the participants discussed issues such as what implications (or challenges) contemporary sculpture has as a genre, if there are any evident universal signs in the works of young artists working with sculpture, and ways of approaching non-narrative mass works.
