Seminar VI - Seewon Hyun

Sep.18.2015

The independent curator and critic Seewon Hyun is the director and co-head of Audio Visual Pavilion whose research explores the contemporary visual culture and art scene. Having launched the Walking Magazine in 2006 and written for Hangyeorae21 for two years from 2010, Hyun is the author of Extremes of Design (2010, Hakgojae), and Object Excursion (2014, Hyunsil Book), as well as the co-writer of Beyond the Political- 30 Years of Reality and Speech (2012, Hyunsil Books). Hyun has also organized exhibitions of diverse scales as an independent curator, and is currently not only the co-director of Audio Visual Pavilion, but is also involved in lectures, talks and performance arts.

This seminar centered on the last 10 years or so of Hyun’s career. She talked about the formation of exhibitions of various natures, from the exhibition Chunsoo Mart 2nd Floor (National Theater Company of Korea, 2011/Festival Bom, 2012) which was organized based on her personal experiences as an independent curator, to event-style exhibition Closing Hour (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, 2012). She emphasized that while the curator has various tasks to perform, one of the most important functions was to write well. She asserted in the importance of writing ? which is often neglected as being trivial ? and that one can mature in her writing ability through habitual practice of writing. Hyun concluded that some good ways of improving one’s writing include setting regular goals for oneself, writing reviews on artists or exhibition reviews, reading aloud one’s own text, and peer reviews. Hyun extends her practice, beyond her position as a curator and head of Audio Visual Pavilion, to working and communicating with people of all fields, holding small scale events and seminars, and producing good writings.
