Seminar VI - Honghee Kim

Oct.20.2012

Honghee Kim, Director of Seoul Museum of Art

A lecture was given by Honghee Kim, who is currently the director of Seoul Museum of Art. Kim had organized the Theresa Hak Kyung Cha retrospective The Dream of the Audience at Ssamzie Space on October 20th, 2003, and has presented numerous thesis and writings including World of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha Seen through Post-colonial Feminism. Kim also continues to lead the research on Cha through Theresa Hak Kyung Cha Seminar discussions at Off and Free Film Festival. The workshop consisted of talking about Cha’s life and work, as well as the relationship between Cha and contemporary Korean art.

Kim started off by placing importance on researching Cha, who is not well known and promoted in Korea but is a significant artist and a pioneer of conceptual art who had already created a video of semiology in 1970s. Kim particularly stressed the importance of developing this exhibition, as Theresa Hak Kyung Cha is an important figure who has already been focused on in the Western academic world for a long time, for her artistic sensibility reflective of dual identity, artworks about existence, and perspective of Post-colonial feminism

Kim advised that Cha should be investigated with other contemporaries of her time, such as Yong-soon Min and Jin-Me Yoon, and also introduced other Korean artists working with the idea of diaspora. Kim finished the workshop by stressing on the fact that Cha must be re-focused from a contemporary context.
