DOOSAN Curator Workshop

Artist IncubatingDOOSAN Curator Workshop

Seminar II - Youngchul Lee

Jun.22.2012

Youngchul Lee, Director of Asia Cultural Development Institute
The second workshop took place on June 22nd in the form of a lecture given by the curator Youngchul  Lee. The 3 participants of the workshop wished to learn about the exhibitions and artist researches conducted by Lee, a critic-cum-curator.

Held in Queens Museum of Art, Across the Pacific (1993) was an exhibition Lee curated while he was working as a critic in the early 1990s. This exhibition was organized on the basis of intellectual meaning and context in the perspective of a critic, and shed a light on the limitations in organizing an exhibition as a curator intervening in the life and art practice of the artist. However, the threshold of such limitations met changes when Lee encountered Silent Movie ((1995), a video work by Chris Marker, two years later in New York. Marker’s work has a tremendous influence on leading Lee away from the frame of critical perspective and representational thinking which had become stagnant in Lee’s curatorial practice.

Lee organized the 2nd Gwangju Biennale, Unmapping the Earth, in 1997 using a nonlinear, ahistorical approach which produced different dimensions of time in a physical space. Such curatorial characteristic is also clearly apparent in the exhibitions City and Video : Necessities of Life in 1998, Living Island in the 2nd Busan Biennale in 2004, and Tipping the Balance in the 1st Anyang Public Art Project in 2005.
Lee also conducted an active research on Yiso Bahc and Nam June Paik. Divine Comedy: A Retrospective of Bahc Yiso held at Rodin Gallery in 2006 focused on the artist whose very life and art practice in the 1990s?which produced installation works, paintings and drawings?had a tremendous influence on Korean art. While Lee held office as the director of Nam June Paik Art Center, he organized numerous exhibitions and researches on Nam June Paik, and strove to proclaim Paik’s excellence throughout the world.
