Performance and Performativity
J. L. Austin abandoned the previous idea of constative utterance: True/False and reestablished the notion of utterance as performative utterance: Success/Fail. A close observance of the concept of performativity was carried out by examining the difference between the reinterpretations of the concept by Jacques Derrida and Judith Butler.
The idea of performativity examined above was divided into “the exhibitionization of performances” and “the performativation of exhibitions” in order to look into how performance was realized through actual exhibitions: the former was exemplified by The World as a Stage (Tate Modern, 2007) and Seven Easy Pieces, a retrospective of Abramovich (Guggenheim Museum, 2005), If I Cannot Dance, I Don’t Want to Be Part of Your Revolution (2005) co-curated by Frederique Bergholz and Annie Fletcher; the latter was by Living Currency (2007 &2010) curated by Pierre Bal-Blanc.
