Seminar V - Hyungcheol Shin

May.25.2018

In the fifth DCW seminar, cultural critic Hyungcheol Shin and the participants discussed critical writing methodology through literature. The first half of the seminar examined ways of connecting photography and literature in a broad context of literature and contemporary art. In the second half of the seminar, Shin and the participants explored in-depth writings by Marguerite Duras.

The first half of the seminar began by examining Shin’s writings, which discerned his own taste in photography, in conjunction with Pierre Bourdieu’s text La Distinction (1979). The writing explored attributes of photography classified under three large themes of matter, incidence and internality, and the discussion observed the individual personal taste that originates from the work.

The seminar also drew a connection between art and literature, and the participants shared their ideas on Duras’ life and writing through Haegue Yang’s work The Malady of Death and her writing Men.
