I Am My Own Wife is a one-actor play by American playwright Doug Wright that tells the story of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite. Based on a true story, this monodrama portrays 35 characters through one actor. I Am My Own Wife had its Korean premiere in 2013 as part of the DOOSAN Humanities Theater 2013: Big History program.
Wright, a gay playwright living in New York, heard from a journalist friend working in Germany who suggested he meet Charlotte—a drag from East Berlin. As he began interviewing Charlotte with the hope of turning her story into a play, Wright slowly became fascinated by her remarkable life. Charlotte was queer, a survivor of both Nazi regime and post-war Soviet occupation of East Berlin, and yet her life contained something far more ambiguous and wondrous.
Through exploring Charlotte’s life, I Am My Own Wife demonstrates that a phenomenon cannot be defined or categorized by established conventions. This production focuses on the essential ambiguity of existence—that interpretation is always determined by the history, relationships, context, and power relations to which the individual belongs.
