The Dictionary of Grandma’s Language is a documentary play that explores the “language” of the playwright’s late grandmother. Jinhee Lee’s grandmother was deaf and unable to use Korean Sign Language. Instead, for over 90 years, she communicated with the world through her own original language. Lee considered her grandmother a creator and performer because she expressed herself through a unique language that focused entirely on sounds, movements, and expressions. After the passing of her grandmother last year, Lee attempts to compile and organize pieces of her grandmother’s language. Through this process, she recovers the presence of her grandmother, while reflecting on the meaning of disability.
Lee is a creator who explores interview-based, personal narratives and the contemporary issues found therein. Based on the belief that “a dramatic moment happens to everyone,” Lee steps outside the theater, entering the actual setting of the story to interact with community members. She continues to focus on plays and art that deal with disabilities in daily life.
