DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce Hyein Lee’s solo exhibition The Complete Moments from November 12th through December 26th. This exhibition will comprise of seven pieces from the Plein-Air series that Lee has been working on for the past five years, as well as four painting and installation work completed through her recent residency in New York.
Hyein Lee’s works have thus far involved regularly observing diverse places then describing her experience and point of view through painting.
While her earlier work incorporated depicting autobiographical landscapes rooted in her memory, since 2010 and on, Lee has taken her canvas to other places such as the outskirts of Seoul or Berlin, then painting her surrounding landscape on a small canvas. By doing so, she has been working with the traditional method championed by the Post-Impressionists. The goal in this type of work is not accurate depiction of form, but to combine with the artist's vision the experience one could gather from physical space and the possibilities that are found within limited materials.
In addition to those works, Lee created a series called Shelter, inspired by the artist's personal experience of searching and roaming for a new home base due to moving caused by urban redevelopment. Lee has created a temporary studio space out on the fields that appear like a storage room, a winter-friendly tent made of felt, a tent that one could wear as clothing, among others, that are all easy to carry and migrate.
In this exhibition, the artist has reinterpreted the small paintings she has created in many different locales, according to her time in New York City, and enlarged the scale of the paintings by about twenty times. Then she took off the stretcher bars and used the canvas fabric in the manner of a Korean traditional blanket, alluding to the often nomadic lifestyle of contemporary beings.
Hyein Lee (b. 1981) received her undergraduate degree and completed her master’s course in Painting at Seoul National University. She has held solo exhibitions at Banjul(2014, Seoul, Korea), Daegu Museum of Art(2013, Daegu, Korea), kunstlerhaus bethanien(2013, Berlin, Germany), and Brain Factory(2011, Seoul, Korea), among other venues. She has been invited to participate in a number of group exhibitions, including at BLUME Museum of Contemporary Art, BMOCA(2015, Paju, Korea), Goyang Aram Nuri Art gallery(2015, Goyang, Korea), Seoul Museum of Art Project Gallery(2014, Seoul, Korea), LIG Art Space(2014, Seoul, Korea), COMMON CENTER(2014, Seoul, Korea), Gallery Zandari(2013, Seoul, Korea), Zaha Museum(2013, Seoul, Korea), Arko Art Center(2011, Seoul, Korea), and Project Space SARUBIA(2010, Seoul, Korea).
