Nakhee Sung
September 2 – October 2, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, September 9, 6-8 pm
DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to announce abstract drawings by South Korean-born artist Nakhee Sung. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 9 at DOOSAN Gallery New York, 533 West 25th Street, New York.
This exhibition features Nakhee Sung’s signature wall drawing using vinyl, spray paint and marker, intermingled with her small-scale drawings made with gouache and pencil on paper, which vary from 8”x10” to 18”x24” in size. Sung is known for her series of abstract drawings and paintings, along with her exhilarating and sophisticated wall drawings that feature vivid colors. Her fluid lines and her irregularly-shaped quirky blobs, which can look elongated, shortened or dropped, dribble their way throughout the entire wall of the gallery space. Her characteristic variety of geometric forms is rhythmically buzzing and amusing to the eyes.
Sung’s smaller drawings are placed amongst the continuous stream of wall drawing, as if they were notes on a manuscript paper. Her pictorial language seems to resonate far beyond a small plane, even though it is confined by a two-dimensional space. The contents in her paper pieces seem to be more than ready to jump outside of their comfort zone in order to explore the undiscovered land on the wall space. The dynamics between these two domains’ visual syncopation flow naturally. Whereas her drawings on paper intimately play in a small, dense space, the wall drawing unveils a more instant and expressive side of her emotion in much larger space, as if emancipated from a limited format. In this exhibition’s wall drawing, she uses different types of materials to engender different types of textures, which reinforce, enhance and accentuate the visual musicality of her works. Sung’s restless and spontaneous drawings stimulate the viewer’s imagination. Her drawings also amplify the irresistible rhythmic sounds of the mind, which people normally turn down on the inside.
Nakhee Sung was born in 1971 in Seoul, Korea. She received her B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI in USA and M.A. from Royal College of Art in London, UK. She has had numerous solo exhibitions in Korea and one in Denmark. Her work has also included in many group exhibitions worldwide including: St-Etienne Museum of Modern Art in St-Etienne, France (2005); Mingyuan Art Center in Shanghai, China (2005); Ssamzie Space, Seoul, Korea (2004); Bizart Center, Shanghi, China (2003); Alternative Space Loop, Seoul, Korea (2003); Youngeun Museum in Gyeonggi-do, Korea (2002); Passage de Retz in Paris, France (2001). She represented South Korea at the 51st Venice Biennale as one of the participant artists (2005). Sung currently lives and works in Seoul, Korea.
