Seminar IV - Sungwon Kim
In the fourth seminar, lecturer Sungwon Kim shared her experiences in directing exhibitions, and discussed the process of creating a unique exhibition in spaces with a diversity of different conditions, characteristics and environment. She also talked about the curator’s attitude and role in exhibitions featuring artists working with a wide range of disciplines.
1. Art Sonje Center, 2000~2005
The seminar discussed the significance of producing new works for an exhibition in early 2000s when there was no concept or consciousness of cost support for production of art works. As the concept of new production/post production was rare at the time, support in creating an exhibition was something new for everyone including the curators, artists and directors of the exhibition space. Furthermore, casting a new light on artists not well known in Korea and abroad provides an opportunity for artists to take a new leap, as well as being a methodology of curating which could offer new trajectories from conventional reading of art and new pivotal points in the direction of the artists’ work.
2. Atelier Hermes, 2006~2010
Befitting the particularity of both a commercial and exhibition space like a salon, the exhibition tried to fit the characteristics of the space and focused more on the solo exhibitions rather than creating a point of criticism. Ultimately, the exhibition was an attempt to present new works by the artists.
3. Spring Wave
Spring Wave was practically a forerunner to Festival Bo:m. Spring Wave started to discuss the boundaries of different genres and present artists who collaborate with others in traversing across the boundaries of performing arts and visual arts. The event at the time also featured works by Jerome Bel from the Tino Sehgal collection.
4. Gallery commission exhibition
Examples included B Side at Gallery Hyundai and Oblique Strategies at Kukje Gallery. Exhibitions at commercial galleries must be approached differently from that of non-profit spaces or art museums. Most importantly, the exhibition must understand the nature of the commercial gallery and grasp the direction of the exhibition with careful selection of the artists and the exhibition title, etc.
5. Hidden Track at Seoul Museum of Art, and Countdown, Ancient Futures, Life A User's Manual, Playtime at Culture Station 284
The exhibition Hidden Track featured works like B side by established artists at a public art museum. As can be seen in the reflection of the exhibition concept in the exhibition title, this exhibition featured new experimentations by established artists rather than their main works. The exhibitions at Culture Station 284 were collaborations by multiple invited curators. It was important to produce an environment in which art directors and invited curators can work together in reasonable and effective manner in producing the exhibition.
