Artist IncubatingDOOSAN Curator Workshop

Seminar VI - Seewon Hyun

Nov.27.2020

The sixth seminar of the 2020 DOOSAN Curator Workshop was conducted by curator Seewon Hyun, and focused on “Curator’s writing.” Hyun introduced specific methods of writing rooted on her own experiences. Also, based on various art-related writings, the participants took a closer look on what it means to write with consistency, specificity and originality.

The seminar examined artist interviews and exhibition forewords in particular, focusing on Interview with Park Mina (2020), uploaded on the website in Audio Visual Pavilion, where Hyun is the director. Through this text, Hyun talked about her experiences in writing and what one must pay attention to when recording an artist interview in text format. Catherine Wood's writing on Sung Hwan Kim's exhibition demonstrated the way the writing itself can lead to experience, and also looked at how the arrangement of paragraphs can give the reader a sense of being onsite. Meanwhile, the writing for Bahc Yiso's solo exhibition at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea was presented as an example of a clear way of writing.

In addition to art-related writing, Hyun also talked about her experiences with the exhibition and curating as a workshop, looking at the example of her lecture performance with Jeuno Kim which she is recently preparing. Also, the participants had a chance to think about the relationship between catalogs and publications in the exhibition space, going on further to examine what different experiences can be had by the audience and writers through such relationship.

This seminar allowed the participants to share specific writing experiences and think about what role writing plays for curators and what the right writing is for specific context, such as exhibitions and interviews.
