‘Why Do You Smoke With Such an Extraordinarily Long Pipe?’
Why Do You Smoke With Such an Extraordinarily Long Pipe? is a project investigating the representation of female figures in Yeoseong Gukgeuk. Repeatedly drawing closer to them and pulling away, sometimes denying their presence yet identifying herself with them, the playwright eventually summons them to her stage. Through this rigorous journey, the play dissects and reinterprets the conventional conclusion of ‘perfected love’ that Yeoseong Gukgeuk typically portrays. This exploration creates a fusion of Yeoseong Gukgeuk’s tradition and a contemporary sensibility.
HWANG JI YOUNG
Yeoseong Gukgeuk (Korean Women’s Traditional Opera) performer and Pansori singer, HWANG JI YOUNG began her career at the age of nine. She studied under Jo Young-sook, a first-generation Gukgeuk master. Facing the representational limits of female figures in Yeoseong Gukgeuk, her work centers on investigating various characters and expands female characters’ active and heroic aspects.
