‘Crossing Boundaries: Shin Park Park Part.1’
Crossing Boundaries: Shin Park Park Part.1 is a personal exploration of the theme of “taking the mother’s surname.” It questions how the ideal form of normal family and the notion of ‘normativity’ strengthens within the patriarchal framework. The piece takes the form of a lecture performance, in which Park Soyoung, both actor and writer, chronicles her desire to take her mother’s surname. Using the presentation system and the form of fake aries, the piece simultaneously undertakes theatrical experimentation while highlighting a central social absurdity: Why is a mother’s surname not being fully accepted by the society and the legal system, and what preexisting social conventions structure our community?
Park Soyoung
As a stage designer and director, Park Soyoung explores spatial dynamics through her works. She rebels against the power inherent in Western theatrical structures and theater spaces. Her works aim to present projects outside the theater or reappropriate traditional theatrical venues for non-Western uses. Park actively discovers and utilizes marginalized sites within the traditional theater or random spaces, also investigates the profound relationship between narrative and the visual and structural forms of set design.
