Eichmann, Where the Night Begins is based on a play by Stefano Massini, an Italian playwright noted for identifying contemporary issues in history that repeat themselves. The play presents an imaginary dialogue between Hannah Arendt, a political philosopher, and the Nazi lieutenant Adolf Eichmann, who organized and implemented the Holocaust. The two engage in a heated conversation based on the court records of the Jerusalem trial and the historical backgrounds of Germany and Judea. Eichmann argues that he only followed the orders of his country, while Arendt confronts him with questions. The philosopher is surprised by Eichmann’s ordinariness, but gradually comes to witness the evil hiding in an otherwise ordinary man.
