In Pansori Les Miserables—Passengers of 99 Ship, IPKOASON adapts Victor Hugo’s novel into pansori. Dealing with human salvation, the absurdities of the system, people’s anger, and revolution, the story imagines that “the world is a single ship.” While following the traditional form of pansori in which a Sorikkun(vocalist) and a Gosu(drummer) lead the story, the performance also introduces a band and two additional characters who support the vocalist’s story and add vivid details to the narrative and the scenes. Pansori Les Miserables—Passengers of 99 Ship tells stories that are still relevant today—vice and virtue, endless questions about life, and the struggles of the younger generation. IPKOASON brings these stories alive through the vocalist’s performance that is rich in satire and humor.
