Doosan Gallery New York is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Yujin Kang from February 5th through March 5th, 2015. This exhibition will feature a selection of representative works from Kang’s early to recent work.

Kang juxtaposes disparate elements such as skyscrapers and gallery spaces, as well as other urban environments with a chunk of meat or a heart, creating surrealistic images. Then, she further intensifies the tension through the scattered and dripped marks of enamel paint on the surface of the image.

In addition, Kang uses the Xerox machine to enlarge or to divide the forms in the image, then uses that as material for her work. In this way, the artist is able to engage with the subject matter with distance, minimizing the artist’s direct emotional expression, composing a picture that is different from conventional abstraction.

For example, Kang’s Inward or Outward -between heart and Guggenheim Bilbao Museum depicts a distorted Guggenheim Museum, a traditional one-point perspective drawing of a swimming pool, as well as a heart. This combination of disparate elements successfully brings out the attitudes and viewpoints of an artist who is concerned with the fundamental issues regarding perception and dimension explored in history of painting.

Through this methodology, Yujin Kang is not merely reproducing the symbolic meaning of an object or its appearance. But by synthetic form of expression, she deconstructs and reconstructs an image, revealing through composite imagery that there may be another essence behind seemingly brilliant landscapes.
