The exhibition The Next Generation is a showcase selection of eight artists, Jungki Beak, Jeamin Cha, Boyun Jang, Sojung Jun, Ji Hyun Jung, Na Kim, Minae Kim, and Wan Lee, who have recently drawn attention in the local art scene. The showcase is intended to intensively introduce their artworks from a forward-looking perspective, with the hopes of examining how to properly accommodate these artists’ new tendencies within contemporary art, as well as how these new tendencies can find their place(s) within the current contemporary art landscape.

The recent development of the Internet and mass media, along with artists’ proactive overseas activities, now allow emerging artists to encounter, in real time, the progress of contemporary art around the world. In this situation, these artists, all born in the late 1970s and the 1980s, reveal a tendency to develop their artworks through subjective and individualized approaches to sensitive domestic and foreign social issues. Further, more so than in the artwork resulting from their work process, they embody their distinctive aesthetics in the context and process of art making.

Their artworks attempt to overcome the rigidity and limitations of Korean contemporary art by subverting, converting, or displacing existing phraseology. Accordingly, this exhibition is intended to provide an opportunity to re-examine the position of Korean contemporary art and its contemporaneity within the global art scene, and to address the possibility of developing Korean contemporary art internationally, and the means by which to achieve this development.
