DOOSAN Gallery holds DOOSAN ART LAB Exhibition 2022, its first exhibition of the year, from Wednesday, January 12 to Saturday, February 19, 2022. “DOOSAN ART LAB” is a program have launched in 2010 by the DOOSAN Art Center to discover and support emerging artists in the fields of visual and performing arts. DOOSAN ART LAB for visual art has selected five artists under the age of 35 through an open call. The artists selected for DOOSAN ART LAB Exhibition 2022 are Yesul Kim, Jieun Uhm, Yae Rim Ryu, Sun Goo Im, and Sl A Joo, this exhibition presents a variety of works including paintings, videos, drawings, and installations.

The DOOSAN ART LAB open call intends to select artists based on the merits of their long-term potential rather than based on a given theme. The five artists chosen through this year’s open call each use different forms and media, but also share a commonality in that they take the ‘reality’ that draws their respective attention as the central axis of their work, to weave in and out of it.

Yesul Kim is interested in providing different interpretive takes on the communities and places of our daily lives and presents specific situations that can be observed through a third-person perspective. Jieun Uhm who works mostly in the medium of video is collecting, recording, and reconstructing personal histories found within disasters, catastrophic events, and other specific environments. Yae Rim Ryu’s paintings, made upon wooden panels, use methods of illustration to communicate fictional narratives created by the artist through characters and backdrops that are ambiguous in terms of gender, race, place, and time. Using graphite on paper, Sun Goo Im draws densely packed scenes to create a fleshed-out narrative from a mix of personal experiences and memories. Sl A Joo, who focuses on female hero narratives in animation and manga, uses 3D printers and silkscreen techniques to generate figures of manga protagonists freely transforming their bodies, transparent and immaterial implements, and so forth, to take real-world forms.

As described above, DOOSAN ART LAB Exhibition 2022 is organized to harmoniously showcase both the independent worlds of each artist’s practices and the connecting links between them. Through the individualized approaches to the reality of the five artists, audiences will have an opportunity to reexamine the mundane times and spaces of our day-to-day lives.
