DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to present Park Kyung Ryul’s solo exhibition, Tense, from September 10 to October 17, 2020. Park was selected to be a part of the DOOSAN Residency New York program through an open call in 2019 and will present paintings along with an array of objects in this exhibition.

Refusing the idea of painting solely confined in a canvas, Park has been investigating ways to expand her art beyond its borders. She views the elements of painting—form, composition, each brush stroke, and lumps of paint—as independent objects and brings them into the exhibition space. The implication of this viewpoint is to tear down the hierarchy and narrative of painting and to even out the elements that structure the painting. Beyond merely expanding upon artistic mediums of expression, Park’s concept of ‘Sculptural Painting’ seeks “to expand the idea of looking at paintings."1) In that vein, Park’s works present the exhibition as a piece of painting by pushing the boundaries of a flat space of canvas to a physical space, offering a new perspective towards painting.

Based on this concept, the exhibition sheds light on the tense of the painting. Park defines time as a progression from the start of her intuitive work process to the moment the viewer encounters the completed piece. The completed piece comes to represent the time stood as a perfect form; it becomes a present continuous form through its interaction with the viewers. Therefore, Tenseconveys the meaning of an ongoing time of a painting as the viewer creates new moments while they navigate around the objects, representing elements of painting, scattered throughout the exhibition space. ‘Tense’,2) which carries dual meanings, also reflects the moment of tension aroused whenever the viewers are eschewing the objects laid on the floor. This sense of tension creates an opportunity for the viewers to reconsider the temporality of painting through their experience.

Park Kyung Ryul (b.1979) received a B.F.A and an M.F.A in Fine Arts from Hongik University, and an M.F.A from Chelsea College of Arts. She has held solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery (2020, Seoul), Baik Art Seoul (2019, Seoul), Lungley Gallery (2018, London), Madame Lillie Gallery (2017, London), and SIDE ROOM Gallery (2017, London). She has also participated in group exhibitions at Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art (2020, Ansan), Culture Station Seoul 284 (2020, Seoul), Ilmin Museum of Art (2019, Seoul), Mine Project (2019, Hong Kong), Beijing Commune (2019, Beijing), SongEun Art Space (2018, Seoul). She was awarded the SongEun Art Excellence Award in 2018, and also participated in SeMA Nanji Residency and MMCA Residency Goyang. Park is currently staying in New York as a Fall 2020 DOOSAN Residency New York artist.
