Inbai Kim
February 11 – March 13, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 11, 6-8 pm
DOOSAN Gallery New York is pleased to present Turbulent O’Clock, an exhibition featuring new works by South Korean-born artist Inbai Kim. The exhibition will open on Thursday, February 11th at DOOSAN Gallery New York, 533 West 25th Street, New York. This exhibition, which is Kim’s first solo exhibition in New York, will consist of new sculptures created from aluminum rods.
In the exhibition, Turbulent O’Clock, investigates Inbai Kim’s determined interest in seeking an ambivalent realm of a different dimension, as his previous work traversed a dimension between a drawing and a sculpture. Kim has been working with his idea of permeating a space between defined dimensions. For this exhibition, he stripped down all sculptural masses, using aluminum rod to create a group of models that seem to portray human figures. The material he chose to work with gives him more freedom to focus on movements during a short period of time rather than becoming caught up in spending the majority of his time making sculptural forms with plaster as he used to do. The reduced human shape leads us the viewer to a domain of uncertainty that coincides with two different dimensions.
Each of his forms captures various characteristics of human movements in time. His sculptures appear to be caught in the midst of performing various actions, such as twirling, punching, throwing, and stretching. Some of these acts seem more elongated than others. They are placed on an altered scale consisting of a long makeshift pedestal in the main gallery. Each immediate action seems to be seized in its space, jumbling all over. Nevertheless, in the end, these accumulated processes become one big stream of drawings of an entity. In another part of the gallery, a figure seems to be emerging from one side of a wall, which looks like it has been penetrated from the other side. In fact, this figure can be seen on both sides of the wall. The viewers’ outlook on these objects depends upon his or her perspective.
Inbai Kim lives and works in Korea. He received his BFA and MFA in sculpture from Hongik University in Seoul, Korea. He has had his solo exhibitions at Arario Seoul (2007) and Gallery Skape in Seoul (2006). His work also has been included in group exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery in London (2009), Seoul Museum of Art in Seoul (2008), and Ssamzie Space in Seoul (2007). Kim will have a solo exhibition at Arario Gallery in Cheonan, Korea this fall.
