DOOSAN Gallery Seoul presents THE SHOW MUST GO ON, a special exhibition of the 2018 Doosan Humanities Theater Series: Altruist, from May 2nd to June 20th, 2018.

An Altruistic life begins with understanding and identifying with the other and expanding such understanding beyond the personal level to the society and the world in which the individual is situated. If altruism means to do good to the world in which one belongs, what meaning lies in art? An altruist is someone who is aware of the fact that an individual is connected to others, and what is beneficial to others is eventually beneficial to oneself, and that all chains of positive effect eventually make the world a better place. Thus, the altruist acts to make changes in the world, voicing out against the absurdities, sufferings and pains in this world.

Artists are those who cast questions to understand the self, others and world through their works. From the effective altruistic perspective of Peter Singer, who believes in the virtue of doing good to as many people as possible, the artist seems to communicate with others through the most ineffective process and outcome of the art work.  While it may be impossible for one art work to suddenly change the world, the artist can reflect on the suffering and pains of the self and others, and slowly generate the idea of being connected to the world through their art. Therefore, the artist must continue to persistently reflect on themselves at a slow pace of thought, contemplate on the meaning of relationships with others, and voice out on the world that’s distressing but unavoidable.
